Originally, Madagascar was a part of the Gondwanaland and Pangaea super continents. Then, when the super continents broke up it stayed with ancient Africa and India. Only 88 million years before today it broke away from India and became its own island. Ever since then it has remained quite geographically stable in relation to Africa and the rest of the world.

Both the topography and geography of Madagascar vary depending on what part of the Island you are. For example, the elevation near the coast is quite low, while near the center of the island there are mountains, the highest of which is Mt. Maromokotro. These varying elevations also have caused various climates and ecosystems to form. One of these are the tropical forests near the coast. The mountains near the center are more like a temperate climate than the coast, and in the south there is even an area that is arid and somewhat desert-like.
