Adaptations of the Fossa

The fossa has very sharp teeth and claws, which help it hold on to its prey and eat them. This is especially important due to the fact that the fossa mainly hunts speedy mammals such as lemurs. Having sharp, retractable claws also helps the fossa climb trees and pursue their prey.

The feet of the fossa are also built for climbing. There are pads on the bottom of the fossas feet which help the fossa both grip onto trees, and also to cushion the fall a fossa would take if it fell. The ankles of the fossa are also quite flexible, which increases its tree climbing ability even more.

The overall body shape of the fossa is another thing that helps it climb and chase its prey. One of these body shape adaptations is that the fossa is quite light, which makes jumping from tree to tree quite easy. The fossa's tail is almost half the length of it body, which helps it balance and maneuver in the treetops.
